Default Transmission problems!?

My father-in-law just bought a 2005 SE about 2 months ago with about 25,000 miles on it, and the transmission went. I guess he was talking to someone else with a 2005 (not sure what model) who had the same problem. Not sure what exactly is wrong with the tranny, but it is in the garage getting fixed. What gives? Is this a common occurrence?
ps. my poor father -in-law is stuck with a Cobalt as a loaner car. Atleast it is a GM, but what a diference.

Very rare for such low miles, there have been a few premature failures but none that soon.
My money is on 3rd sprag or sun gear

NOt sure what happenned. I know he got it back, and ofcourse it was under warranty. My wife said it was the tranny and he got it back yesterday, that'* is all I know.
When I talk to him I'll find out the whole story and post it. I just had a carfax ran and found out it used to be a rental car, so it was probably beat on.
