Default Tips Corroding Off/Dealer Trys to Sell Entire Muffl Assembly

Two Issues. Both of my exhaust tips are corroding at the exaust pipe. One was so loose, I twisted it off. My wife took the tip to the deal to make an appointment to have it reinstalled and the told her they don't sell the part and she would have to have the entire system replaced from the intermediate pipe (I believe this pipe is the pipe right after the resonator going towards the tips) wich includes both mufflers. The cost just for parts was over $500. Two questions:

What would cause the tips to corrode off? I've searched the forum and didn't find anyone with a similar problem.

Any comments on the dealer'* response regarding having to the entire muffler assembly. I smell a skunk in the wood pile!

#1. Not sure why the tips corroded.

#2 I recently inquired about getting the GXP exhaust tips and found out they do not sell them individually. You have to buy the whole assembly for $500. What crap :(

I bought some new tips and plan on getting them installed this week. If your interested, I could sell you my old stock tips. They are in great condition. Pics here:

Thanks for the reply. I would be interested in your tips although, I am going to first visit a muffler shop and see if they can be reinstalled. Again thanks.

I doubt new tips could be reinstalled until the rusted sections of the tailpipes are removed and sleeved with new pipe.
