first off, I'm a complete noob when it comes to the electrical system of my car.

I have three brake lights out on my bonnie. However, all four of the tail lights work. Are there really 8 bulbs back there or could I be looking at a short somewhere?

You need to also check the center lights in the trunk lid.

The brake lights are dual element bulbs. In other words, the same bulb works two things. The tail light comes on and that works one element. When you press on the brake pedal, the second element comes on making the light brighter.
So, you don't have 8 bulbs, but most likely 4 bulbs.
