You answered my questions while I was posting. If (when) it happens again try to find out what'* clicking. I've got some wiring diagrams, PM me with your email address if you want a copy.

Crank? When It wants to
Dash lights? Yes on the run position but not while the key in in the "start" position
Hear fuel pump? Yes
Do you or your wife have a lot of 'stuff' on your key chain?
SilverBullet, you metioned a "click" coming out of the fuse pannel. I would start there with the relays. I would also check any of the circuit breakers that are in there if you get a chance. Those can sometimes be fickle
I just saw TechTed'* post. Ted, I did not mean to setp on your feet

IT HAPPENED AGAIN
The worst this time
So one week has gone by since the last time but this time was bad. Out with the whole family for a photo shoot, so after we decide to go for a ride.
It'* been sunny and warm the last couple of weeks with more in the forecast.
After about 15 minutes of highway driving with little to no traffic, I decide to pick up the pace a little. Going around 100 kph and then I go 3/4 throttle.
Instantly the tach drops to zero and I'm coasting dead at 110 kph.
I slow it down until the brake volume booster runs out of vacuum.....both feet on the brakes. The steering is fine...until it slows down.
So there we are 15 miles from town in the middle of nowhere all dressed up in suits and dresses.
Stop, put it in neutral then park trying to start but nothing, dead.
I pop the hood, for lack of anything else to do, and jiggle some wiring around the fuse box. Nothing looks out of place. Fan is still running, like it should for 3 min after shut off.
5 minutes later I try it and it starts fine. :? Whew
Then we are heading back home and 5 minutes later I give it another goose and bam, it dies again at 100 kph. Instant drop off of the tach from 3500 rpm to 0.
This time it took about the same 5 minutes before I could get any reaction out of the starter. All other power was fine.
It'* parked in my garage right now.
Victor wants to bring the Firebird instead of the Bonne to the WCBF06 Meet. :(
It has never let us down like this car just has.

Might be time to switch back to the original ECM or at least check the connections. I just read your thread on the water injection. In that thread you said the original water tank leaked. Could any of that water have reached the ECM?

Paul...I have another idea.
My car has been technically stalling and giving me overall crap for a few months. Never left me dead yet...but it'* been getting closer.
When I pulled the crank position sensor I found some metal shavings stuck to the magnet of the sensor. Hmmm I thought.. things weren't adding up and maybe that little bit of stuff could be causing my issue.
For $25 I put a new sensor on last night. So far I've logged about 60 miles and no issues so far...going to drive it a lot this w/e and test it out. Like you...I need this problem fixed before our upcoming trip to WC.
Consider blowing the sensor out with air...see if that helps.

I talked to my daughter'* boyfriend today who had the same problem with his Silver 2000 SSEi. He found the paperwork showing what things the dealer had tried that I'll be getting from him this weekend. He said that the crank sensor was not something that was changed. That would explain the car dying, but not that the starter won't activate.

Yes I don't think it is the crank position sensor because it should still crank with the starter but doesn't.
Yes the water injection tank is mounted directly over the PCM and yes it did leak onto it. It didn't leak on it for more than 10 minutes and I thought I cleaned up the few ounzes that came out but you never know. :? The PCM has a good rubber seal on its cover. The leak was on the opposite side of the connector and it wasn't directly on it, it went mostly on the plexiglass cover.
Worth a check though. I will disassemble and inspect. Thanks.
