<dumb girl question here> ...what is the purpose of using a larger filter? Will it filter better and/or for a longer length of time?

Delco are very good filters but the best IMHO, is the NAPA filters. They are made by WIX. It'* all I've ever used. THE WORST oil filters are the FRAM, although there air filters are good.
Some oil change garages use an oil fill hose that comes from a volume containing sump.
It you notice that when you do put the correct 4.7 liters in these engines, the level on the dipstick does not come up to the topmost mark.
They may be using the dipstick to gauge the amount of oil. In which case it will be over filled by 1/2 - 3/4 of a liter or quart.
It really shouldn't be a problem because this will only affect the level in your sump by about 1/8".

Keep in mind though that I have probably removed about 4 HUNDRED napa (silver) filters in my work to date. So I'm not saying they are bad, but the napa (silver line only) were the ONLY four I have ever seen do that.....and that'* out of every single filter I have ever removed.....(probably around 2 THOUSAND).......figuring at 0.7 oil changes a day for 12 years at 260 work days a year.
