I'm not completely familiar with how the shift mechanism works on the Bonneville, but I believe that the shifter selection indicator is connected to the shift mechanism below it. In other words, the shifter bezel comes up in one peice and there is a slider below it for the shift indicator. Remove your instrument panel bezel (the one that goes around the radio and instrument panel), the shift ****, and the console bezel to see if something has come loose. You're basically going to have to take the console bezel apart anyone to diagnose, or correct the problem. Either way, it'* something that has come loose from the shift mechanism.

Do the gear indications on the Instrument Cluster track with the shifter?

<<Do the gear indications on the Instrument Cluster track with the shifter?>>

Not quite.

The gear indications are all transparent on a painted black background. They are all lit from a small light below that assembly. When you move the shifter up and down a black plastic "ribbon" that has a hole in it moves in unison with the shifter. The hole is just large enough to allow light to show through each gear indication as the hole lines up with the a particular gear indicator. At that point the other letters/numbers are "blacked out". If the ribbon were not there at all, all gear indications would be lit. The ribbon is attached to the shifter mechaniism via a slot on the shifter mechanism. The ribbon attaches to that, at the rear if I remember correctly. Quite easy to get in there and feel your way through the system. Quite simple in operation. I believe the ribbon slipped out of its "keeper slot" on the shift mechanism and is stuck in 1 spot. Let us know what you find.

leftd90-

I was driving home tonight, glanced down at my sift console and realized I really hosed up my explanation to you about how the light works. Please excuse a major brain fart.

Actually, the light inside the console DOES light up all the gear indications at once. What the internal black plastic strap DOES is light up a small transparent oval next to each letter/number. The black strap has only one oval hole in it. When the shift lever moves down to the next letter/number the plastic strap moves with it. As the hole in the strap moves it allows light to shine through the little "oval" opening next to the letter/number and at the same time prevents light from shining up through the previous oval holes and all the ones on either side of it. I hope this explains things a little better. The working principal is the same; I just forgot the the little oval hole is the only thing that emits light to indicate which gear the shift lever is at.
