Default 00 SSEI, DRL'* no longer come on, Headlights on at startup

So recently i installed my new hid lights and everything worked great for about two weeks. however, now when i start the car, even if i have been sittin in direct sunlight all day, my headlights come on when i turn the key. now i can turn them off and drive around with just the parking lights, but still im curious as to what is going on. when this problem first started I would eventually gain control of the lights after i drove around for a little bit. this was indicated by the dash lights getting really bright. then i could switch the headlights to the off position on the stalk and just the DRLs would be on. Anyone heard anything like this before. I've heard a possible failing light sensor but i thought that was indicated by the headlights staying on all the time even after the car had been shut off. Even heard that this could be a DRL module problem but that was the first i had ever heard of a "DRL module" and so i have no idea where it is or what it looks like.

Is anything covering the DRL sensor?

Other than the little plastic bubble that normally covers it, nope.
