The resistor should work and keep the light off. Try to clear the history code first before you buy a bypass module.

SUCCESS!

resoldered the ends on the resistor and used a little computer pigtail (Cd-ROM drive) to hold it.

Disconnected the battery overnight, and this morning, VOILA! light comes on at startup and goes out at once!

Thanks to all. BTW, Radio Shack had the resistor, 99 cents for a pack of five.
