Sounds like a solenoid went bad. When I shift into 1st at 20mph, the whole car lunges, and you KNOW you are in gear. It'* the feel of power . I could just imagine what it should be like at 35mph.

so really, what i need you to do is be in second gear, and throw your shifter down to 1st. if it pulls your car slower, we've eliminated a problem. if there'* no engine braking, and the tranny free-wheels as you slow down, than we can limit it to one of two things.
I did around 35 mph with the gear selector in 2 and dropped it into 1st (foot off of the accelerator) and the car just coasted. There was no engine braking or negitive G effect like what should normally happen...

What do you think?

your solenoids are just fine. however, the 3rd gear sprag and/or third gear clutch is dead.

tranny shop time :(

the thing about solenoids is that when they go out, you typically loose 2 gears, not just one. in the case of the 4t65, 3rd gear has both solenoids off, which would mean if your solenoids died, you would be guaranteed to at least have 3rd gear

anyhew, for anyone who'* interested, i'll do a quick write-up tomorrow explaining what solenoids and clutches are locked up in what gears, and what you can expect to happen if they die. there'* a great chart that i'll try to get up... very handy for trouble shooting.
