Default transmission problems in reverse

I just purchased a 1994 bonneville sse with the fw2 transmission and reverse is extremely weak and the majority of the time i have to be on an incline or start the momentum of the car forward with the drive gear then shift to reverse to even get the car moving. I have spent over an hour searching this site for this problem to no avail... My first question is:

What are the possible causes behind this extremely weak reverse gear?

With the transmission layout, is the reverse gear linked to any other gears such as first and second, because I have no problem whatsoever with the forward drive gears?

What can I do to fix this problem?

1. From the park position, go from P all the way down to 1st.
2. Go from 1st to R. What happens?
