Default transmission problem

hi, i have a 1997 bonneville sse (137,000,miles) and the transmission doesnt shifit out of first and the speedometer doesnt work until the car is driven and warms up for a while. then it works perfectly. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be causing this?

Sounds like you have a couple problems. One apparently is a shift solonoid. I'd suggest getting your car scanned ASAP. We need codes to help diagnose.

One cheap solution is to have the transmission flushed. It MIGHT help, but is an $80 gamble in some cases.

What does your trans fluid look/smell like?
If you put your year and trim level in your signature, it will help with future posting.

Bad VSS? Car does not know how fast its going, so it cant shift. My truck did that to me when a fuse for the VSS went.

Fenderman, please put your year and model (trim level) in your signature. It'll help alot. Do you have a HUD? Does it read the same as the Speedo? Can you get a scantool on the car to check the VSS?

I would guess bad VSS, too. Please clarify.. Does the car shift out of first once it is warmed up?

hi thanks for the help. I have a 1997 sse with 130k. When the car is not shifting the HUD and the Speedo do not work (i think the car is stuck in second not first.) . Once its warm everything works fine, the speedo and hud work and it shifts perfectly. I told my mechanic to look at the VSS.

Thanks
