Default Traction & ABS Light

If I'm simply driving around in town, and get any kind of tire spin on dry asphalt. Typically due to excessive acceleration. Both the Traction Off and ABS lights will come on.

Once I restart the car & it'* computer they will turn off again.

What is causing this to happen?

This is in the '98 SSEi.

I believe it'* related to the PCM which I think is expensive ...but again I'm not sure. I guess we'll wait for the guru'* to chime in.

I'm wondering if your brake fluid level is just low enough that when the Traction Control kicks in, the fluid drop triggers the Low Fluid warning, which automatically turns off Traction Control and ABS until the fluid level comes up again.

I was talking to one of my friends at shcool today who is a licensed Emissions Tester in Ontario about why this would happen.

He says that when he puts ANY car on the dyno when he tests them that these lights come on. (If the car has traction or ABS)

I guess Traction was only built to prevent skidding etc. it doesn't like it when you induce the loss of traction from engine power.

So this is a Universal thing, I'm assuming it means nothing wrong.

Nope, sorry. Traction Control is _designed_ to overcome loss of traction from engine power; ABS is designed to overcome loss of traction from braking power (on a bad surface). When it'* functioning normally you will get no warning lights no matter how many times you invoke it (e.g. when trying to accelerate in a bad snowstorm).

The reason your friend sees the warning lights during a dyno test is because the drive wheels are spinning but the rear wheels are sending no rotation signals at all, and the system can't figure out what that means, so it flags a warning light at you and bails. Actually your friend is supposed to switch off the traction control before doing the dyno test. (I think the ABS system will flag errors of its own during the test, which you can ignore).

Getting back to our original point: if you're getting warning lights during regular driving, it'* trying to tell you something.

Hey aCiD. I had the same problem. Traction and ABS lights would come on ocasionaly at first and then more frequently to the point where they would almost always be on. If they were not on, sometimes traction control would activate under light accelleration or ABS when braking slowly, and then lights would come on. I removed 2 fuses under the hood marked ABS to de-activate the system. Also had droning/ buzzing noise from front of car that varied with speed.
Fixed it by replacing the front wheel bearings. They are $193.00 each from Canadian Tire and have the ABS wheel sensors atatched. They will loan you the 94mm socket and hub puller that you will need for free.
One sensor was rusty inside. Probably giving bad info to the computer. You might want to have someone check for error codes to eliminate guesswork also.
