When I was trying to diagnose my problem, here is how I narrowed it down. Keep in mind I already established the fact that the traction off command would be given once the vehicle was in motion:
1)Start vehicle. Go to first gear and leave it there, drive up to 30 mph. Traction light did not illuminate. This told me that the WSS'* were doing their job. Then again, the ABS light *should* have popped on if it was a WSS.
2)Same as above, but go to second to let it shift. Once it got to the 1-2 threshold, I noticed the slip, and about that time was when the traction off lamp came on.
I knew it wasn't an overtemp condition because I ran a test prior to this one with the vehicle COLD. Lamp came on within 10 seconds of intial startup and gear selection. And mine did not throw on the SES lamp whenever traction was turned off via PCM, though I think it DID store a code.

My Traction Off light is always lit on the dash.
I checked the sensor plugs, what is the PMV that Will refers to above??
It doesn't seem to hurt it with the Traction Off lit, could it??
I push the button on the shifter, nothing happens. Checked all releated fuses. Not sure where else to go.
Any suggestions?

It'* very likely a bad wheel speed sensor. If ABS is lighting up as well..then the ABS unit under your aribox is also a suspect. Unfortunately scanning the ABS/wheel speed sensors is typically a dealership only scan. Although some mechanics do have the scanners capable of seeing these parameters.
Maybe only the traction is suffering a problem.
I personally had a 95 SSEi with that same issue...although..the light only came on once I started moving. Never an ABS light. Next owner had it scanned and was told it was a bad wheel speed sensor. This is odd..because one would think it would cause an ABS issue also.
