Default Systems Monitor not working/?

I have a 1996 SE that I just purchased. I thought that for the 1st couple of weeks that the SYSEMS MONITOR section of the dashboard (the one with a diagram of a car) used to populate with information when I first started the car. Now all I get is a message that says CHECK GAGES. That message goes away after 2 or 3 seconds. If I open a door nothing lights up..I thought it showed the door as open on the screen/ diagram of the car on the dash If it was working correctly?

At or about the same time my gas gauge seems not to be working correctly reading full or near full all of the time, in addtion the low fuel light doesn't .light-up at start up

Here'* the rub...I was trying to get the remote keyless entry to work and I was into the wiring under the steering wheel/knee panel..., A mobile alarm company tried to program new remotes to the after market alarm that the prior owner installed, then a GM dealer tried to re-program the existing factory keyless entry...So a lot of people have been into this.

Can anyone advise me where to look first...is there a fuse or relay that might be bad?
maybe a ground was disturbed? Any ideas would be great.

Default guages

well the only thig I can think of is. Since you say the perv owner had people under there

1) there is a wire loose,
2) wires crossed ( which blew the monitor)
3)over loaded circuit
4) fuse might be blown

As far as the gas guage is concerned , you may have a short in it. wires loose, or the sending unit might be bad. Or thegauge itself could be bad.
I dont know anything about the remots, sorry on this one.

Correct. Only the SSE/SSEi systems/lamp monitor will tell you if a hood, door, or trunk is open, as well as any exterior lamps.

Personally since you know the alarm system isn't helping anything and this is maybe the third think you are having trouble with elelctrically. You may want to consider having it removed. That will take it out of the equation as a possible problem.

Please continue your other two threads regarding the keyless entry issues and gas guage troubles.

So that extra data never showed up? That'* Great I guess...WOW...I thought I had a problem that apparently I don't have. I could have sworn that there was more info there, of course the only time it would flash would be if when the car was first put into the ACC mode. The only info I see is the CHECK GAGES light for 2 seconds...If that'* normal than Thank God!! I guess I should go ahead and work on the other items that I have to work on.

I think the idea of completely removing the old alarm is a good one. I trust that I will be able to tell where any and all cuts and splices go back together.

Thanks to all

Typically with the exception of the ignition wiring, alarms are tapped into the existing wiring w/o cutting. I've pulled a few and overall, it'* usually easy and quick.
