Mom has a 1997 SSE, (Dad'* got an 05 GXP), and it'* been doing some weird things lately. #1 SECURITY light is intermittent, stays on mostly. Cars runs and drives normally. #2 The trunk release also died. #3 Today, while the keys were on the counter, minding their own business, the Alarm went off, for no apparent reason. I need to fix this, what can be the malfunction?

I strongly suspect the tamper cable in the trunk lid. Remove the trunk lid carpet and find the mechanical cable that runs from the lock cylinder to the electrical connector. Disconnect the connector. Does the security light stay off now?

If so, leave it this way.

If that does, and i want to fix it correctly, what is the whole fix? Thanks!!

The cable end will probably be broken at the lock cylinder. It would mean replacing the cylinder itself.

The only purpose of that cable is to detect when someone is tampering with your lock WITHOUT a key.

Yes, the light went out, although i need to replace the solenoid, as it doesn't work with the interior button or the key fob.

If your remote release doesn't work with the switch or fob, it may be the relay (located above the passenger footwell).

Listen for the relay to click when you hit the switch. It'* hard to hear, so removing the hushpanel trim may help you hear it.

Try releasing the trunk with the fob or switch with the trunk OPEN. Do you hear it? If so, the latch is misadjusted causing it to bind, and the force of the release mechanism can't overcome it. Sometimes a light lubrication is all you need.

It makes a sick ATTEMPT at trying to operate (open or closed), but i believe the solenoid is just dead.

I've tried all those things, i think my mother doesn't care enough to screw with it.
