(I believe I'm hammering my differential with more torque at a more damaging lower rpm than you)

Personally it'* my feeling that if you put a brand new 60 and 65 side by side on the same vehicle (power wise) they would both be fairly equal with the 65 possibly lasting longer only because it would use the torque management programming to protect itself from abuse.
I've owned both S1 with the 60 and S2 with the 65. If anything the S2 65'* that I have ridden in and driven..have felt better and more solid over 100,000 miles than the S1'*.
Now...being aware of the differences in both motors and trans... it would be interesting if a side by side comparison could be done....

Bill, you're pointing out the most extreme mileage 4T65E'* only. In a sense, you're skewing the data. I can list 2 or 3 4T60'* with high mileage for each one you listed, but that'* not the point.
From our experience here, and from external data sources (internet research and polling trans shops), the 4T60 is a much more reliable transmission, and in fact seems to be just as strong with the Series 2 mated to it. Note that we've had no abnormal rates of failure in the 96 SSEi'*. In fact, they go many miles.
There are many who believe the 65E was a move in the wrong direction. I'm one of them.
