I don't know about Pontiac, but Chevy uses a high-adhesion silicone sealer. You'll probably have to break it, then trim the old adhesive away.

I've tried to swap the mirrors out of a housing before, to make a cheaper non-heated mirror heated. My drivers side got hit, broke off, but glass was fine, so I bought a non-heated mirror, popped the glass out and fed my wiring in and popped my glass in. I must have done it wrong, because it was loose and bounced around. Thing is I couldn't see how to do it right, and I am very mechanically inclined.

this was his original question. So HOW did you pop the glass out?

Just the glass part of the mirror, or the whole mirror plate and mounting parts? I pulled the whole mirror assembly out of the housing, yes, pulled and it popped out.

i want to remove the mirror glass from the glue. I have heard that heating it with a blowdryer will work.
