You can't just ground the sensor and/or the relay on the 97, it will turn on the SES light. I found a fix though, the ZZPerformance high low fan switch. http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/pro...witch_hilo.htm
It is designed for the Grand Prix, but it will work on the Bonneville also. The wiring is basically the same, but the fans will turn off when the key is off instead of continuing to run as stated in their description. Because of this you don't need the timer module . I just installed it on my 97 and I have low speed or high speed fans when I want or I can turn it off and the ECM controls it.
thanx NVSSEI .. you da man.. so I guess I"m stuck payin the 50 bux USD for it

Hmmm. Anyone have this? I'm tempted to try it out.

I'm surprised the 95-99 climate controls won't display the coolant temperature.

The PCM controlls the fans with the info it receives from the engine coolant temperature sensor.

Fuddy,
This is direct from the 1997 Service Manual
Automatic Control Air Conditioning page 1C-15
DISPLAYING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
The only way to display diagnostic trouble codes (DTC'*) is by using a scan tool. There are no provisions for "ON-BOARD" diagnostics.

Smellbird,
If you are referring to the switch, I have it installed now and any time the ignition is on I have the choice of manual Low speed, manual High speed, or computer controlled.

Drifter,
If you go that route PM me. I have some suggested changes in the directions they send.

How hard to install? Just splice into some wires, run some wires, and mount the switch?

That'* pretty much it. If you decide to do it let me know and I'll help you around the Grand Prix directions. You mount the switch on a grounded screw, splice a hot wire to a key on source and splice two wires to a wire on each relay and then cut the wire you spliced them to. (put the switch inline to the relay ground)
