Default Help- window sash slider coil spring 1992 Bonneville?

Currently I am replacing the right front side window actuator motor and new speakers. I removed the coiled spring off the sash slider while I cleaned the slider and window gears and put new grease at all the friction points. Unfortunately I was not paying much attention to how the coil spring functioned as I took the sash slider apart for cleaning and new grease.

I see where the spring center fits the notch of the sash slider and the other end of the coil spring with the loop wraps to the slot in the sheet metal housing. It just seems if I just place the spring back in without pre loading the spring in some way it would serve little purpose as the window goes up and down.

What function does this spring play? Does the spring hold the window up once the motor has cranked it closed. Does the spring apply more pressure as the window goes higher or lower? If I can figure out its function maybe I can see how to put it back togeather. My Pontiac Shop Manual does not say anything about replacing this large spring.

If all else fails I guess I could take off the drivers side door panel if necessary. I you guys have some tricks of the trade for this one! Thanks for any feedback!

Default window sash spring

I think I answered my own question by rotating the spring 1/2 turn then putting it back togeather so it has a moderate amount of tension
