Default Heater Question

I am having issues with my blower motor. Basically it doesn't work. I have narrowed it down to either being the control unit(CCU) or from some of the wiring diagrams I have seen there is a blower motor control modual.. I have bench tested and in car tested the blower itself. Works fine, I am only getting 0.8 volts to the plug at any speed setting. Basically what I am askin is has anyone had this problem before and is ther 2 seperate units? I didn't have time today to dig into it too much deeper so I am stuck at the moment. I don't really wanna shred my dash searching for a modual if there isn't a seperate one. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It seems that you have a voltmeter. Good. You're already halfway through testing the Blower Control Module.

Blower Control Module

DESCRIPTION

The Blower Control Module is a solid state device that operates the blower motor. The Blower Control Module outputs a voltage that varies between 0 volts (blower motor OFF) and 12 volts (maximum blower motor speed).

OPERATION

To determine the appropriate output voltage, the Blower Control Module monitors a varying voltage signal (between about 2 and 8 volts) from the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) programmer. The module then amplifies the signal and applies voltage directly to the blower motor. Blower Control Module output voltage is also monitored by the HVAC programmer.

Your BCM has already failed the first part of the testing. Verify that the HVAC programmer is working properly by checking the signal voltage. This is a gray wire in my 93 but may be different in your 97. It can be found at the top of the BCM in the electrical connector. As described above, the voltage should be 2~8 volts.

The BCM is located under the hood in the top of the blower housing and the HVAC programmer is under the dash on the passenger'* side.

Um, not to be a smartass or anything, but have you checked the motor itself? Seems to be a rash of them going out lately...

I believe we are talking about an Electronic Climate Control rather than a manual system. If this is the case, there is no blower motor resistor. The BCM controls the blower speed in the ECC systems. If it is a manual system, the HI fan setting is run by a relay rather than the resistors so typically the fan would run on either HI or (LO, MED1 & MED2) only. I suppose that both the resistors and relay could have a problem at the same time but it'* not likely.
