head bolts
Hi,
Just wondering if a 92 bonny uses stretch bolts?
The instructions are to set it to 35 Ft-lbs then turn everything 90' then 90' again
Sounds like stretch bolts?

always get NEW bolts -unless u want to possibly remove a broken one?? Now -from an old mechanic & always gaining experience= !!- I will NEVER !! EVER!!= replace -ANY new Head Gasket- without coating the gasket with K W Coppercoat-SPRAY!! there are a multitude of reasons i say this -learning @ a very young age!! I dont care if the head gasket is a felpro top of the line with blue sealer already on it!! I spray both sides=liberally & the head & block surfaces!! To Date!!= I have never had a head gasket leak or fail!! & I mean yes i hace in past overheated engines to the point of paint burning on them!! Never a gasket failure!! Broken belys -water pump failures- what ever -never broke a head or gasket!! For what thats worth & many a new mechanic has argued with me & ive seen them all have to replace head gaskets!!

It'* a vin code L
k. I ordered replacement. It'* funny how we never think twice about replacing bolts on a water pump or alternator but when it comes to a head bolt they're throw away items.
Thanks everyone.

The '98 is TTY bolts and recommended to replace them, Not sure about the '92 but the bolts look the same material from the same manufacturer for both years; so I'd say they're Torque to yield. I've known mechanics who reuse the TTY`* on 90`* GM'* such as buicks and never had an issue.
Twinpilot, I've never replaced a non TTY head bolt and never had a problem. Only bolts I've seen broken where rusted into place or over torqued. I always replace TTY`* for the insurance. I also never use Copper Coat unless it'* a copper or metal shim gasket. It'* not necessary, even with the old copper gaskets, if the head and block are flat with a good surface and these new gaskets come with sealer already on it for minor imperfections from improper surfacing. I see using copper coat on a good surface with a built in sealer on the gasket as a sign of not knowing what you`re doing; But it'* good insurance and I see no problem with it besides corrosion when aluminum and copper come in contact, Cometic or the OEM explicitly stating not to use it or making it harder to remove the gasket in the future.

yes =Smoker - 90++ % I also agree- tty bolts = just best for xtra insurance!! Im same as for frozen/ rusted head bolts too!- I also will comment - i did have 2 sets of felpro blue coated gaskets leak on rebuilds-that i didnt coat!! Therefore now- I always still use the spray coppercoat on -EVERY head gasket. to date after many, many years -no leaks at all. I have even had a bad head (cracked) shop didnt find!! That i had to replace after new stsrt up- had coated the blue gasket & all i had to do was =re-coat it again after cleaning & installed it again. No Leaks= over a year running still. Just me- yet i just use the coat for xtra insurance too. I also use an = anti-sieze on all head bolts too.

Have never put anything on head gaskets, and never had a problem.....deck has to be flat and free of corrosion, same as head....
And I never use never seize on head bolts, especially, TTY, it affects the torque....I run a thread chaser in the holes, blow them out, wire brush the bolts, lightly apply oil to the threads, let the oil drip off the threads and then wipe the threads before installation....
3800'* are not known for head gaskets.....3.1/3.4'* are another subject.....you can spray all you want on those head gaskets, and it won't prevent them from leaking...nature of the beast, especially in vans......people will lose coolant(lower intake manifold gaskets) and drive with air pockets, creating warped heads and head gasket problems.....
