both of my L27s have ALWAYS had a lifter type of sound. like a real soft tick. is it like that?

It has that too, but it sounds like it is igniting too early, pinging, knocking, take your pick of terms. Premature detonation?

Premature detonation can cause engine damage. You need to check the plugs - now.

if you suspect detonation, i would suggest a scanner with live data. kr will not throw a code.
