Default Engine shutting off at speed, without warning.

Hello all,
I have a 1995 Bonneville SSEi with over 200K miles.

Tuesday, I took the car on a 144 mile trip to a customers site. Approx. 40 minutes into my trip on back roads at 55-60 MPH, the engine shut off and I got several chimes. Stereo and dash lights stayed on, RPM gage dropped to 0, Speedometer went down as car slowed. A car was following me, so I shifted to N, signaled and coasted off of the road. At this point, I shifted into Park, turned the key off, and restarted the car. Drove the rest of the way (some Interstate, some City miles) without any more problems.

On my return trip, approx 30 minutes into the trip, I'm on I40 near Raleigh NC, at 65-70 MPH, the engine shuts off again. All electrical items, radio/AC, stay on. As I'm in the middle of traffic, I shift to Neutral and restart the car at speed. Motor starts up, but this time there is surging or hesitation while driving. This lasted for several minutes (Looking for a good spot to pull over) then smoothed out. So I continued driving.

I stopped for Dinner and several minutes after getting back on the interstate, I95 this time, it shuts off again. This time, I was clear to pull over and did. Restarted the car and continued home without another hiccup.

After searching the forum, I came up with Fuel pump/filter, or the crank position sensor (I think that was the name).

Any other Ideas that come to mind?

I tried to have my local Advanced Auto scan it, but they "upgraded" their scanner and it gave communication errors. I think it was an OBD 2 only device.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Your 95 is probably the OBD 1.5 system. Do you remember while this was happening if your power windows/locks still worked?

Have a look in this thread here and inspect yours.

i would suspect ign control module, or crank pos sensor both can cause the issues. mostly due to heat soak. if you have a heat gun you can carefully heat the icm and see if it stalls

Crank shaft position sensor. Been there, done that. Twice.

I third the crank sensor, if not the CKP then the ICM as mentioned.

None of the above. The mechanic also thought it would be the CPS or the ICM as well. He tried to duplicate the symptoms by shorting the CPS signal to ground, but the car would stumble, and continue running. So, he replaced the ICM and test drove it. When I drove it, it shut off on the parking lot at idle. I restarted, and drove it down the road to test, and I did the same thing. So, after more testing, he replaced the CPS. No change.
I've checked the ground buss and it is pristine. Still looked like it had a light film of oil on it with no corrosion.
Tracing out wiring now. Current OBD code that it is giving is P1361.

Have you seen our Tech Info article about https://www.gmforum.com/obd-ii-troub.../p1361-284152/? If you've replaced the ICM, check the wiring carefully. You could have an intermittent short.

After wiring check, visited a Pick and Pull and found a 95 Buick LeSaber wit an OEM PCM unit. After installing, drove the 50 miles back without even a hiccup.
Now to work on the intermittent cruise control problem...I should have pulled the Cruise Control Servo while I was looking at it

Never would have figured it was the PCM, glad you got that fixed, and thanks for the update, hope it keeps running good for you!
