Car randomly shutting off?... (fixed)
Hey guys, trying to figure out a new problem I got with the pontiac.
When driving randomly the car will just shut off. I'll be driving and all of a sudden the car like stalls and the battery light turns on yet every thing in the car still works. I have to pull over and put the car in park then it starts right back up. Either it does it and I have to pull over to restart it OR I lose power and the battery light turns on but only for a second then goes back to normal without having to pull over.
Any idea on what this could be?
Thanks guys!
***Forgot to mention, yesterday while driving the car like surged for a second and the check engine light turn on, still drove though. I pulled over and turned the car off then back on and the engine light turned off

If you haven't already done so, remove and thoroughly clean both ends of both battery cables. Pull back the insulation on the ends and check for corrosion underneath. If you can't clean them, replace them. When remaking the connections use dielectric grease. Do the same thing with ICM ground, PCM ground, and body grounds.

You will be the dozenth or more person this month with this problem. I agree with the battery cables 100%. Pull those rubber boots off and be prepared for a surprise.

also, this isn't related to the problem, but you should be able to start it in neutral, so you don't have to pull over, put it in P, and start moving again

first time in my 7 year career as a driver that i was actually stranded by my own car
drove perfect for3 days then randomly drove down (crank no start) at work in the service drive. Go figure! Just tossed em the keys and told them to fix it plus the thermostat. $40/hour labor charge is great
Now i gotta deal with the nissan sentra rental :(

I just went through this same thing.
I did have a loose negative battery cable, but that was only part of the problem.
My ignition module was the culprit. They were able to tap it with a screwdriver and get the car to quit running.
I also could not start it in Neutral and had to pull over to turn everything off, then start it right back up.
It was a guessing game as to when it would quit, and always at the worst possible time.
Check the battery connections first, but DO check the ingition module.
I hope it'* as simple as the battery connection.
Good Luck!

This also sounds like a bad Crank Shaft and/or Camshaft sensor.
Is it just when the car is warmed up? Your Check Engine light on?

Nope, does it anytime. Warmed up or cold it doesnt matter. It never did it until that one time the check engine light came on, but it turned off once i cycled the ignition. I guess well see what the volkswagen techs say. Hopefully soon cause Im loving my rental
