Default dash brake light warning

i have a 1993 bonneville se, and recently the "brake" light in the dash has illuminated and is followed by an audible beeping noise. what does this light mean, what is the cause, and how can i correct it? does anyone know?

Thanks for the link John. Murzy, that is a very DANGEROUS thing. It usually means your master cylinder is failing. You may have no brakes next time you need them. That topic link was a milder easier solution.
