Crappy Gas mileage

I then pulled the platinum plugs and installed good ol Champion coppers going one hotter on the heat range. You wouldn't believe the power and mileage increase!
Can you explain this so someone who doesn't know a ton about cars understands enough to explain it to his mechanical friend?
