Default Car won't start, stall, die saga continues

This has been going on for over a year now. Turns over but won't start, intermittently. Then when it starts it runs for a few minutes then dies and won't start.

95 SSEi. Replaced the crank sensor, twice. Tested ignition module: good. Replaced alternator twice. Each time car is "fixed" it runs for a while; i.e. days/weeks then dies. Now noticed it has No spark.

Hooked up scanner and this is what I see when the car won't start: mode 1 message 0. QDM1,2,4 are in fault, battery voltage is 12.7 volts, C_CERROR (cam/crank error timer) parameter increments each time car turns over and catches a littlebut zeros out when key is turned off. Parameters "Alternator fault detected" = yes, "Engine Hot light" = on, but temp guage is below 200. Also, NO DTC codes are set.

The alternator is brand new, I replaced it twice and the current one is an upgrade. Before buying parts would like some troublshooting advice or if anyone has any ideas.

I am thinking this is a heat-related problem in the Ignition Module area. However, I am confused about the QDM1,2,4. All of them faulting is kinda strange. I don't think it is the PCM cause the engine will run fine when it starts. I think the cam/crank error is due to the QDM problem.

Anyway, any advice or exerience in testing the ignition module, or the Crank/CAM sensor, or the PCM would be greatly appreciated.

Later.

You probably need access to the factory service manual. Have you tried the library yet?

Thanks for the info. I will stop buy on my way home from work today.

I have an ALLDATA subscription, but low and behold they don't have any info on the QDM stuff. Go figure.

Thanks.

Default PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!: Car dies/stalls saga continues.

I still can't believe it. After channging the Crank Sensor, twice, two batteries, two alternators and 2 towings home, and over a year of frustration, I finally think I found the problem with my Bonnie.

I had the ignition module tested several months back and it tested just fine. The guy tested it four time and it passed. This past week I decided to "instrument" the ignition pack (module and coils) and pulled the harness with the idea I was going to put a bunch of test wires in there. Then I thought what the heck and brought it to Autozone to get it tested. 1st test pass. Second test, failed the "Sat"uration test. Third test passed. It was a Wells tester by the way. I decided to wait and do my "instrumentation" thingy instead of paying $160+. Brought it back the next day and tried again. Sure enought, 1st test pass. Second tes, fail "SAT"uration test. Third test passed. ****. Decided to plunk down the $160 and roll the dice. I know I'm a cheap bastard.

It worked! Dammit, I spent over a year troubleshooting this car and it was the damn ignition module after all.

I don't trust her yet though. Been down this road before. Will try her around the neighborhood this weekend and take her into work next week.

Thanks to all in this newsgroup for your help over the past year or so.

Now on to the cup holder, Steering wheel buttons, Traction Contorl, Perf/Touring shift, whining Power Steering, ... problems.

Later.

Default Me too

I think my module is going out also. It just dies, cool off a few minutes, crank it up and all'* well. This has happened only a few times and has ususally set a code for the crank sensor. Well now it isn't setting any codes. Just dies and the computer doesn't catch it. It is happening more often now and it too is grounded until I get around to checking it out. This car has the original module and coils. Maybe time to bring it in for a check.

Does this module control the fuel pump power supply as well? I am getting intermittent fuel pump operation. For instance, when I can't start it (like now), the fuel pump does not turn on for 2 sec or so, when the ignition is first turned on.

Dead on the side of the road for 1.5 weeks now, with no end in sight (see Another Fuel Pump? subject in this forum).

[You may need a good service manual to diagnose the problem...

Try one of our gerheads, maybe one of them will have an idea for you...]

I have a Haynes. I will research more. Point me to the Gearheads!

Thanks. The Bonnie sits in the garage. No work will be done from here without sound advise.

I took every fuse out & tested it wit a digital multimeter. Nothing bad. The windows will not roll up, and that keeps me from having it towed to someone. I am thinking that there may be a problem with the ignition switch, that doesn't allow the high amp accesories to run. The flaw in that theory, is that it cranks over just fine.

Thanks for your help.

I don't have the 96 manual, but the first thing I would look at is the fuel pump relay. Maybe someone can tell us the location of it...
