car making funy noise when turning key in igniton

when i turn the key in the ignition it doesnt start just makes this grinding noise ,so ill turn it off then start it again and it catches and starts. any idea what it is, how to trouble shoot, how i can stop it from making this noise?

or the sound of your starter teeth grinding against the flywheel the cause that i know of could either be oil or trans fluid on either the flywheel or starter or broken or chipped teeth on either the flywheel or starter teeth
