Yes, the V5 compressor in our cars is a variable compression unit that does not need to cycle on and off.
Also, your compressor certainly will turn on below 50*. What do you think happens when you turn on your defroster? I've never heard of the A/C lines freezing. :?

Lash, it says in the FSM it won't run under 50* or something like that.
