For what it'* worth, here'* my experience with loss of coolant. My problem occured very similar to yours. I was driving down the highway when the check gauges light came on, temp gauge was in the red. Pulled over to add some antifreeze (kept a supply in the trunk cause I was regularly running low). When I finished topping off the radiator the engine quit. Wouldn't restart and was pumping white smoke when cranking it over. Had it towed to the dealer and, like you feared the worst (blown head or intake maniflod gasket, dead engine) turned out to be a control module (don't know it'* technical name) on the manifold that blew and dumped the antifreeze into the cylinders. After a complete tune-up, including oil change and replacing that module... everything'* fine The module and some of the labor was covered under warranty but had to pay for the collateral repairs (about $600). Good luck

Unfortunately for you Steve...you have an L67 which doesn't usually suffer the dreaded intake manifold disease.

I would MUCH wrather install NAPA parts than the dimestore crap, Carquest is right up there with NAPA, but shops mark up the parts as it is common to do(especially at our ultra low 55$ an hour shop ratemost average 70)...I'd wrather install Carquest because then I have a block to walk to warranty anything if sumthing bad happens and because I can bitch at them in person about the failure (though I havent had any to date....)
hey Kennigton...NAPA still has the Delco parts line for WP'* fuel pumps, etc right? (used too at my old shop...Harry'* on Rand in palatine-NAPA autocare center)
ah the memories....
a 65$ fuel pump from autozone that has to be replaced 3 times is not a $$$ saver, trust us pro'*....
