The way I look at this issue is do you really have an oil pump problem?

1. Test and make sure. You are aiming to be proactive, however the cars are known for other things that "look" as you are describing.
2. While testing, why not change the sender it to save yourself the time. Plus..it'll come with a nice new gasket.
3. It'* probably the cluster. I hope for you it'* cluster or sender.

Well, I have had my oil pump changed. My mechanic did it while the engine was in the car. My issue was a stuck Check Valve that caused the oil pressure to spike, blow the oil filter off, then lose all oil pressure.

This is the only oil pump I have heard of, and this isn't what yours sounds like. From the sounds of the low pressure, I would bet the sensor. If you are getting sporatic readings, follow bills plan up there. I had to do that on mine once I verified the pressure sender was working.

Cluster has nothing to do with the dinger. The dinger is controlled by ECU on what it reads from the sender.

With this new information let'* rule out the cluster (the cheap easy non-dirty fix). If you are getting a warning dng you should not be driving or running the car until you are testing the pressure to find out if the sender or oil pump are bad. Running with no oil pressure will as Peter mentioned kill your motor quickly.
