Default ACTRON SCAN TOOL WON'T PULL CODES

GOT A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON YESTERDAY ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK.
STOPPED AT AUTOZONE TO USE THEIR SCAN TOOL - ACTRON, BUT IT WOULDN'T PULL A CODE :? YES IT WAS OBD II COMPLIANT.

TRIED IT SEVERAL TIMES, MYSELF AND THE COUNTER GUY.

ANYONE EVER HAD THIS HAPPEN :?:

WAS THINKING ABOUT BUYING ONE AS THE CAR HAS QUITE A FEW MILES ON IT.
BUT IF THESE ARE UNRELIABLE, NOT GOING TO PART WITH THE CASH.

On the internet, all caps is yelling

I have an Actron, and several others do too. Did the nimrod at AZ have the correct cartridge in the tool? Was the ignition on? Sounds like simple questions, but easy to overlook sometimes.

Try another auto parts store and see if you can get scanned.

Sorry 'bout the caps... bad habit.

Yes the ignition was on, don't know about the cartridge, assume he had it right, he asked what the car was before he came out with the tool.

Going to try Parts America... lunch time.

Will update.

OK, is a code P0442 small evap leak...

I did notice this weekend that the boots on the vacuum line(*) for the evap cannister and a couple of others are bad, as in ready to fall off.

Also cleaned the engine bay and may have inadvertinaly pulled one off.
Will start there and see how things go.

Any better ideas - let me know.

Thanks...

Looks like you're on the right track. Check all the vacuum lines while you're at it, especially the lines that go to the vacuum accumulator. It'* located on the firewall next to the windshield wiper motor. Just to the left of it as you face the car. Black plastic.
