1997 ATC DIAGNOSTICS
It seems that after a battery change the ECC may take a while to reset itself, so this may go away by itself. If not, the codes can only be read by a "Tech 2" scanner that the dealer has.
However, so far, what I've found for the '97:
You should really read this whole thread, or at least the 2nd and 3rd pages. There is a lot of information here for you.

But there is some good news...
If you don't want to take it to a dealer or you don't have access to a scanner that is capable or reading and clearing the HVAC codes, then...
Any codes in the HVAC programmer memory are cleared AFTER 50 drive cycles without a reoccurance of the code.
Having said that, if you get hot and cold, and the air is coming out of the vents that you selected, at the fan speed you want, you don't HAVE to fix it.
Do a search on "ECC" in the 92-99 Mechanical section for more detail.

97 SSE, can you not type in caps? It'* seen as yelling on an internet forum. Also, if you put your year and model (97 SSE) in your signature, it'll help in the future. Your signature is where we typically look for your car information, and your username may be overlooked.
i can get the air coming out of the vents that i selected, at the fan speed that i want, but hot and cold is a problem. i can get hot and cold, but not on demand.
if i go from min to max on the temperature switch i may get more heat. then if i go to min temp i may get cold.

Sounds like an airmix door actuator, but I wouldn't think that replacing the battery should have affected that. I'll look in the books when I get home to see what I can find.

I have the same problem after I disconnect the battery (I think there was at least one other report of this). Eventually, the flashing goes away and the heat starts working fine.
I would look at the air mix door to see if it is moving (fully) when the temp is changed.

i did read the thread you linked. I have a better understanding of the ecc system, but i think i need to find someone with a tech2 scanner.
