Default 1996 193,000 miles - Worth new Trans?

I guess the title says it but...

1996 Pontiac Bonneville SSE V6 3.8L. Coming up on 200K. Needs new AC compressor and lines.

Transmission is shuddering up around 50-70mph, gonna try replacing TCC solenoid and flushing transmission first, but I'm feeling more than likely that the trans is on it'* last leg. Apart from this the car runs great, takes about a 1qt of oil between changes, ext in good condition (no peeling/missing), interior in stellar condition. Owned for the last 140K by my father who I know took good care of it and performed timely routine maint.

Opinions on if it'* worth replacing the trans for a few grand to drive another (hopefully) 100K? I'm worried that as soon as I spend that much on it all the other little stuff will start failing haha!

A few grand will net you a decent down payment on a newer"clunker". The 3800'* are known for 300K+ miles.

I say let her go. Parts for these things are far and few in between now(new parts).

I know its hard, I parted with my 97 Bonneville last year.

Before calling it dead, I recommend confirming it is in fact the transmission that is giving you the trouble. 50-70mph is the perfect speed for ignition misfires to rear their ugly head. If you couple that with loosy goosy motor/transmission mounts and driveline bits, then the whole car can seem like it'* shaking itself apart, especially when the torque converter is locked up.

If the tranny is packing up, I agree with Mike. Around here, 3800 powered cars can be had dirt cheap.

Thanks for the feedback, gents.

I'll do some more looking into it before calling it. Like Mike said, always sucks to have to say goodbye to a piece of equipment that has served so well.

Cheers.
