my 88 SSE'* commpass and DIC is going out, they flash on and off, then a smell of hot wires coming from the compass side and that area gets warm... if you notice at night those screens have thin red lines that goes across them, (not visibale unless the lights are dimmed ALL THE WAY DOWN.....) However, with this problem both screen'* red lines/ lights are super bright and the compass is way to bright (everything on it is lit up BRIGHT!)... and the DIC is dim, like the compass drawing power. they both flash on and off at the same time.
could it be a ground or theold wiring?
How much would it cost to replace them?

I know some people have opened the instrument panel up to work on things like that. You can also swap a used instrument panel in from another SSE. You can find those at the junkyard or on Ebay. The dealer has them too.

Ah yes...a used instrument cluster...good call. I know a thihg or two about those.

Its almost worth replacing it, better then foolin around with the electronics back there, be prepared to pony up some dough for a new one from the dealer. Used may be your best bet, then keep the old one to dismantle and learn from.

ya know... i picked up a 97 Riv SUPCHARGED recently sweet car! but i still have my 88 SSE.... (that year had the cool side sport mirrors... better than the 90-91 SSE sport mirrors and every time i go down to see her, i almost spoge my pants... hot car i'll have to shell it out... i want a 91 SSE like mine blk an blk rims, but swap the sport mirrors and front grill from the 88
