Default Stock rims can't be chromed, what gives!?

Hey, if you guys are fellow vistors to Your Ride, I'm sure you have read Pattie'* post about chroming stock rims and even posted a pic of a stock five star chromed. I really liked the look so I spoke to Pattie via AIM. Pattie said that they're made out of aluminum so I said okay. I called the local chrome shop the next day (today) and they said the aluminum wheels cannot be chromed cuz it won't stick. So how did they manage to chrome the exactly same rims that I have? Any ideas?

Most chrome wheels are aluminum. The 20 inch Enkeis I looked at for my GTP were definitely aluminum.

They should have to strip off the finish on the stocks.
But I would think anything could be chromed if done right.

Well Jimmo, my pops spoke to the person on the other end at the chrome shop. It turns out that they can't do it but other might be able to do it. HOWEVER, the person suggested that I go ahead buy new rims because the cost of chroming the five stars are about equal or more expensive than buying new rims. So I think I might take the new rim route. You're right Jimmo, anything can be done but it cost money

the point of chroming the 5 spokes is because it looks awsome and not many people have it.

Yes they do look awesome but I'm not made of money and I figure that if I'm going to spend at least 400, might as well get brand new rims and not having to risk the stock rims flaking or so. I like the look of them but I'm trying to be economical and cool at the same time, after all I'm moving to New York soon and there will be hell whole lot of snow

salt is the real enemy...but that is why you go to the junk yard, get 15dollar steel wheels for the winter and then wrap them in snow tires
