Default Strange, sad tale of a Bonneville

Some bizarre and sad news this week: You probably heard about the 6-year-old boy who died when a Southwest Airlines jet ran off the end of the runway at Midway in Chicago and crushed a car. That car turned out to be a '94 Bonneville, which is now starring in a strange story of its own: it disappeared (at least for a while).

A week after the crash, family'* missing car reappears

For days, the Woods tried to find their car -- the white Pontiac crushed last Thursday when a Southwest Airlines plane struck it and killed their 6-year-old son.

Leroy Woods' driver'* license, the family medical insurance cards and Lisa Woods' eyeglasses were left behind in the 1994 Bonneville.

Family attorney Ron Stearney Jr. said National Transportation Safety Board investigators told him Sunday the car had been released to the city.

But everywhere Stearney called -- 311, police media affairs, the Chicago Lawn District police station and the 83rd Street police pound -- he couldn't get help finding the car.

"If they can't find that car, c'mon, it was the one under a big orange airplane," Stearney said.

Turns out, city sources said, the Woods car wasn't released by the NTSB until Wednesday. The family plans to get the car today.

Sigh... This is what I get for not paying attention... (and I'm _in_ this city, too...)

I must be a real softy.

I sat and read the article and tears started to well up in my eyes. I had to wipe them twice to finish reading it!!

This is what started them:
Quote:
As Joshua was laid to rest Wednesday, his 4-year-old brother, Jacob, wanted that quarter placed in Joshua'* hand.

He wanted to be sure his big brother had enough money to buy a gumball in heaven.
The innocence of children.

Truly sad indeed.

All of this could have been avoided if big planes diverted to Ohare where there is actually room for error. Its freakin close to midway! No need for all this "crushable concrete" nonsense or this new tech they are trying to propose when common sense will solve the problem and save you money. Speaking of which, common sense is lacking these days.

My total WAG here is that they towed it to the same hangar that they carried the plane. Once they got the whole mess separated (not counting the part where they found the plane had wound up impaled on a fire hydrant), I seriously doubt they would have allowed anybody to haul the car off somewhere else before they got the initial investigation done about who hit what, and exactly where.

It'* true that it was a ridiculous night, weather-wise: I was taking the train home that evening, and we were delayed for half an hour behind a bunch of other trains in the middle of the snowstorm because some idiot had managed to drive off an overpass and land right in the middle of the Northwest Line tracks, blocking all three of them.

After getting to my home station a half-hour late, I hopped in the car, flipped on the radio, and immediately heard the first news bulletins about the plane off the runway at Midway. "Jeez," I thought. "If I make it home in one piece tonight, I think I'm going to rent the original "Airport"...
