Rogue, our cones are very similar in size, actually. Mine is just broader than it is long. I think the real reason the 00+ don't sound like the older cars is that I have a cleaner path to the outside from behind the headlamp assembly. It really lets the noise out.
I have a friend at work that retrofitted a Jetta with an M45 Eaton. He told me that at just the right angle on my car, it sounds like I have a straight-cut manual gearbox. You can actually hear the nosedrive gears. This angle is pretty much dead on to the headlight.
Yours has a little higher pitch than mine. I think you're trapping the lower tones in the engine compartment.
