smell, I've noticed that also but it doesn't really look like that in person. :? But the tire is supposed to perform well in snow and rain(like I'll ever see that!) so perhaps they tried to make them somewhat knobby. 
I think I just invented a word! However, they ride smooth. I also have a Grand Cherokee with SUV tires on it and so I know what knobby(copyright) tires can sound like.
