Vinegar and very hot water...mix 1/2 and 1/2...dip a cloth into the mixture and hold onto the adhesive.
I've also used rubbing alcohol to clean off adhesive...I'm assuming that is okay for paint because the vinyl decal instrucstions say to use it on surfaces prior to decaling.
Disclaimer...I have not had any problems with such solutions on my paint, however you may wish to research this more or try it on a less visible area!
