We use to have a DIY garage here with 10 lifts. It was awesome!
They even had an alignment bay!
It was by member ship $50yr initially to join, then $15 per hour.
They recommended that you bring your own hand tools,rental for hand tools small extra fee
Welder, pipe cutters/benders, machining service you name it they had it!
They had a waiver and since you had to be a member and agree to many conditions,
including no alcohol on premises, I think there insurance claims were Low.
One stipulation also was that someone from staff assisted/ inspected all cars first before lifting any vehicle - safety first.
One other requirement from our work safe program stipulation was also that one staff had to have first aid training also on site with first aid supplies/room meeting specs.
Unfortunately it was eventually sold and another licensed Repair shop took over -no more DIY here.
I sure miss that place.

you should start your own. i think they would be a big hit in cold areas

OMG That would be a dream come true Justin, good idea, and with the connections I have to all the heritage/classic clubs and huge private collection owners, it would be a big hit and a ton of fun!
I would have my own living quarters on site with a special "lounge for executive members" to keep the boys happy..LOL !!! (beer time)
Now all I need to do is win the lottery!!
Property here is the most expensive in all of North America. Your average home here now is 1 million$
The building alone that the DIY shop resided on today with the building and large amount of square footage they had, I estimate it'* value today at are u ready..
15+ million Dollars $$$$$$!!!!! + tools LOL.

i thought in the cities around here there are old manufacturing and storage buildings that have been dormant forever, that would be cheap i would think

Wow..I wish I could relate to the word cheap around here.
Luckily I do know classic car guys that own shops or have lifts on their own properties.
But I have to beg often...throw them numerous bottles of wine a beer kegs at x-mas and with all so busy here, and lifts tied up with their own going projects..it is a hope and wait scenario,..keep calling, till someone finally does me a favor & gives me 3 hours of lift time. This sucks. I feel like I'm a complete outsider, (not a multi millionaire like these lucky guys)
If I showed u some photos of the many private rich guy'* club here...It would blow ur mind! A few even have their own working Texaco antique globe pump fuel stations on their properties! One guy beside the gas station, has his own real 1950'* general store with all the trimmings...And then wait until u get to see the real 3 story 15,000 sq ft car collections NO BS...it is here, all within 100 miles of Vancouver.
If U look in the left rear of this photo outside u can see the circular driveway with dual tall fuel pumps and General Store.

One thing they all share in common. Extreme Wealth, on acreage, secluded private entrances, large house, underground access to buildings, full pro security, sprinkler systems, and here comes the real kicker...they are all OCD types and generally flip out on purchasing other collectables like Coca-Cola fridges bars, and every car guys dream signs in mint condition, old player whurlitzers, juke boxes, toy collections and so much more..SICKENING,,,U feel very small so quick..but these guys are so down to earth once u know them...fascinating..how a pig farmer, or Dealership owner or Welcome to Hollywood North ** ..can have so much!
What some of the car guys here own is simply crazy! including air planes on strip and helicopters on site.
I often find their places overwhelming when I visit.
Truth be known...I hope I never have all that stuff to maintain & worry about! -keep it simple is best.

Most self help repair shops w/lifts don't make it because of liability ins claims for injuries. Cost is outrageous.

thats what i was thinking the cost would have to be significantly less than going to a shop to atract people, so it wold have to be something cheap to be able to do it at all.
