Default fuel gauge erratic

My fuel gauge bounces around especially in am or after gas fill. Also the reading for milage I can travel on available fuel also fluctuates. Initially, it was happening when I fill up from a particular gas station but now it is not limited to that.

Anyone else see this on their vehicle (mine is 2007 malibu) ? Have I got moisture in my tank?

Sounds like the sender is going bad.

The fuel sender is on the pump.

Yeah, the fuel level sender is probably getting flaky. The miles remaining would be affected by this as well. This would not be affected by water in the tank, unless there was so much water that the sender rusted or something, but that much water would make the engine refuse to run.

"A fuel gauge displays that fluctuates between empty and full may be due to a mechanical failure. The fuel sending unit float arm may 'stick' at certain levels, and fall back into place either naturally or with help from vehicle movement. Once the float arm falls back into place, the fuel gauge becomes accurate again"

This happens to my Malibu (especially just after I fill gas and I don't know why more often just after filling gas). Is there a cleaner I can pour into gas tank that might help unstick the float arm... Otherwise the fix seems quite involved

The arm is likely not the problem but the resistive film that sends the signal. They get bad spots.

if it has bad spots...would it show empty or correct amount of fuel (that is binary) or would it be just all over the place...most of the time it shows correct and once in a while it goes to empty for a short while.

The contact on the arm could be going bad too.

Either way, all of this points to replacing the fuel level sender. If you're going to keep the car a while, you may as well replace the fuel pump with it while you have it torn down for the sender.
