Default Fuel Gauge Not working Properly

Stupid me not paying attention to the miles driven and ran out of gas this morning. I then noticed the gauge read full as well. Is there a known issue with the fuel gauge mechanism in the tank? I'm not famiiliar with how it works and what I might start to check on as being the problem. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
