Dome light timer?
1989 Olds 98.
Is there a timer for the dome/courtesy lights? When I push the door handle button but don't open the door the lights come on as they should but don't turn off, I have to randomly open and close doors until they go off sometimes that won't even do it then I have to turn ignition to on then off and they sometimes stay on when I'm driving. So for now I just pulled the fuse.
I figured there might be a timer somewhere.
Thanks!
J

It'* known as 'illuminated entry' and I believe it'* part of the Remote Keyless Entry system. There is usually a switch on the door handle that activate the feature when the latch button is pressed. That would be my guess, that the switch is not working properly. I can't remember if it'* just the drivers door, or both fronts.

yes, if I remember, they should only come on for 10 seconds and then go out(with door locked, and pulling up on the handle, and releasing)......
This may have a lamp module, which turns the lights on......now if the input from the switch in the latch assembly is bad, this can keep the lights on....for some reason I remember them being magnetic, and could stick.....so even though you release the handle, the input to the module keeps them on....what I mean is, it'* like you lift the handle and don't release it...this will keep the lights on....
One thing you can try.....open the door, and keep it open......close the latch with a screw driver.....now lock the door by pressing your keyless fob, or the power door lock switch....wait 30 seconds.....now, lift the handle on the outside, and release.....the lights should come on and go out after 10 seconds...if they stay on, take a rubber mallet, and tap on the metal around the door latch....if the lights go out, that switch is sticking.....this is not a foolproof test,,,,,could still stay on, and the switch could still be bad....like I said for some reason I thought they were magnetic switches....

I have a 91 Olds Toronado with the same Illuminated entry. I have a manual on this car and it shows the whole illuminated entry system is controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). There is a switch connected to each door handle, when you pull on the handle it grounds the circuit and sends that signal to the BCM which turns on the lights. If both doors are doing it, I would doubt it'* the switches.
As rjolly67 says it also does work with the Keyless entry. I'll look further and see if I can find how to troubleshoot it, so far all I can find is how to troubleshoot it when lights DON'T come on.

Dennis, you jumped on someone else'* post.......
You should open the Pontiac folder, then above the list of Posts, click on the "New Thread" icon to make your own post....
JScatt, makes no difference if handle or push button, the switch works the same way.....

I moved his post into its own thread in the 2000-2005 Bonneville section.
