Can anyone tell me if the low tread indicators on low profile tires make any noise when they are getting close to replacement time?

No different from regular tires....they don't make noise...

the reason why I'm asking is I purchased a 2012 malibu and I have had it 1 month and ever since I drove it off the lot it sounds like there is a nail in the tire so I had them checked and they found nothing in the tires but the ticking sound persists Any ideas?

Nail or stone in the tread. Take a look yourself.

I agree, you will have to look for yourself. The wear indicator is just a 2/32" raised rubber bar that wears flush with the tread when it gets to that point. No noise or anything, it'* just a molded part of the tire. If you rule out anything being stuck in the tire, you will likely need to check other parts of the rotating bits, including brakes, wheels, wheel covers (yes, wheel covers), cv shafts, etc.

rjolly, you were right to include wheel covers in the list, your post reminded me of an episode many moons ago when a pebble somehow got inside the center cap of the 5 spoke SS wheels on my 71 Chevelle, surprising how much racket it made.

I included it because we also had a '93 Taurus at one point that made a hilarious racket rolling down the road, that is, until we took the wheel covers off. We presume they were warped by the climate and ended up finally replacing them when the racket finally drove my mom crazy.

Also, vids of the noise can go a long way to helping with diagnosis.
