'95 Cheyenne back up light problem
My '95 with a manual transmission has a back up light problem. The light will not come on when the stick is placed in "R"......... I have discovered that the back up light switch does not reach far enough into the bell housing to activate the light.... I've pulled the switch and manually activated the ball and the lights come on. I cannot find a switch that inserts a bit farther into the housing......ideas anyone??

Have you tried a new switch? The ball might be worn down enough not to make contact when in reverse. Or the slider in the trans might be worn down where the switch rides meaning the trans cover need to be replaced. Is this a 5 speed?

If it is the aluminum 5 speed you need to compleatly dissemble the transmission and replace the rod the shift fork rides on. Or the case is worn out letting the shift fork rod to have some play, regardless you need to take the trans apart to see what the problem is. If it was the old 4 speed you could just remove the shift cover from the top of the transmission assembly and replace it with a rebuilt unit. I would take out the switch and look in there with a flash light and see if you can see if the shift fork rod has a groove worn in it when it'* in reverse.
Too much work just to deal with reverse light. I have only had the vehicle for 6 months, and the previous owner had tranny rebuilt just a few years ago. I will wire a dash switch to activate light for just that need.

I was thinking about suggesting that to you any ways. At least the circuit is switched with the ignition so you won't run the battery dead if you accidentally leave them on.
