honestly I would look for a used handy cam that uses the DVDs I have heard the minidv is more of a headache then it is worth

How do you want us to do that? Tell you it'll scrap the subframe of the car if you do another flyover video. Tell you to save up for other things?

my parents have a $600 miniDV camera that they bought a few years ago, and I have used it several times with no problems.

where could I go wrong for $150?

I have no clue were your going with that because your dead wrong!!! Why do you think prosumer cameras use MINI DV and not DVD'*? Do not get a DVD camera they are the WORST! I have 2 MINI DV cameras Sony HDR-Z1U and Canon GL2(Canon sucks by the way) and have had no problems with them. I work with tons of MINI DV cameras no problems.
