Default Replaced Steering Column - No Start-New Keys to Match Vats

Good Morning All,

I have a 1999 Bonneville SE. Replaced steering column with a salvage yard column due to a broken turn signal switch. Replaced column physically matches original. All connectors hooked up properly to include air bag system and main harness. My car is a VATS 11 and the replaced column key is a VATS 12, so I had new VATS 11 keys made to match the value in my BCM.

Car wont start. When I turn the key to accessory, blower, radio and interior lights come on. Turn key to start, blower and radio go out, interior lights stay on. Hear a clicking noise like a solenoid under the passenger side of dash when I attempt to start. No crank. Battery is fine as are all fuses. Have moved shift lever to neutral and back to park, nothing. I have run out options I can think of, hopefully someones wisdom can help me out.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Verify you are seeing voltage at the 'tickle' wire at the starter when turning the key. This is the small wire that kicks the solenoid and ramps up the starter.

Do you have the wire loop routed through the opening in the turn signal switch?
I have the info for that vehicle if you need anything.

Thanks Gents for the feedback. Another problem I failed to mention as I did not assume they are related is my blower motor runs all the time even with key out. When I disconnected the blower motor the car fired right up!

Now I need to figure out the blower problem. I have automatic climate control and I understand that there is no relay for that but it is controlled by the resistor. If Im mistaken please weigh in. I have 4 relays in the maxifuse box but none of them control the blower as I tested all of them with a new resistor. No luck. My next mission is to replace the module - damn expensive - I have replaced it before and its fairly simple. Im just hoping that replacing it will turn the blower off and make it function normally....

Was the blower issue happening before the new column?

Here'* the diagram for your AC system.

Yes, it was happening before the column issue, so I'm going to replace the resistor (for auto climate control) as I believe the resistor also performs a relay type function. No relay for the blower in this car. Also need to replace the turn signal stalk as wipers only work on high; recently replaced the wiper motor thinking that was the problem.

What resistor?
You have a modular AC system and is computer controlled. That module is located at the passenger side dash area. Do you have a decent scan tool?

Hi carfixer,

The Bonneville with auto climate control does have a resistor, at least that'* what it is called. It is located under the Maxifuse panel. I have replaced it before to resolve blower problems. Below is a link with a pic:

I'm not aware of anything else that controls on/off functions for the blower.

That is a bit more than a resistor. That is the module.
