Default VATS Bypass ideas: Your thoughts, please

Howdy!
I'm fixin' to swap a steering column into my wife'* '93SSEi. Reason being the turn signal switch is ruined, so I got a new column, with a key.
So, I will have to bypass the VATS. I measured my keys resistance, but I was thinking instead I would use a potentiometer. Turn the dial, the car will sense the correct resistance, then off I go.

That was idea #1.
Someone told me it'* possible to pop the pellet out of the key. I was nervous of trying, anyone ever do it with success?
That was idea#2.

Idea#3 would be the traditional reistor selection, and take it from there.

Your thoughts??

Thanks,
Adam
