Grand Am GT issues starting
Vehicle: 2001 Grand Am GT
Engine: V6 3.4L
Miles: 110k
My vehicle has recently developed an intermittent start issue. I'll crank and crank but the vehicle never fires. Interestingly enough its come after I had the starter replaced. Here'* what I know, starter and battery were replaced about a year ago, starter then failed and replaced under warranty about 4 months ago. Since then issues. Took to the shop, they claimed the fuel pump was bad and replaced, returned home and issues still occurred. While cranking I have plenty of battery and can hear the engine turning over but the vehicle just refuses to fire. A couple of times its started and the service vehicle soon light and the trac off light are on, trac light can't be turned off with the button. I'll drive and shut the car off and next time I start the car the lights will be off. The car runs fine when it does start. Had to be towed once so far because it just refused to start, then started fine when the shop got it. Any ideas?

I think you have developed a PassLock problem....scan tool capable of reading "B" codes would verify this with a B2958 or B2960 code.....
When it doesn't start, spray carb cleaner into the intake....if it starts and runs as long as you spray, you know it'* a fuel delivery problem....if fuel pressure is ok, Chances are you have a security PassLock problem and the injectors are not firing....this can be verified with a noid light while cranking....
Usual fix is a new PassLock sensor.........or there are various wiring scheme fixes that can be found on the internet....

Interestly enough I haven't had the security light come on at all since I had the ignition security module fixed, which is the passlock problem correct? I had to have it replaced two years ago as well after I gave up on leaving the key in the on position for 10 minutes to start the car.

I never liked the way GM used their THEFT/SECURITY light with PassLock....
With Passkey I, II, or III, the light initially comes on and goes out after 3 seconds, if there is no problem.....if it stays on, you know you have a problem.....
PassLock is different......you turn the key to on, and it stays on, even if there is no problem......if you crank the vehicle, and the car won't start, it continues to stay on when you release the key.....the ONLY time it goes out, is when the car starts and continues to run.....so if the car won't start, that THEFT light stays on, and you don't know if it'* a PassLock problem or something else.....
Now if the THEFT light flashes, you know it'* definitely a problem......but the only way you know if there is a problem, for sure, is with a scan tool that reads "B" codes......very few do.....
